MAAOM Board Meeting July 26 2013
In attendance: Meret Bainbridge, Graham Haynes, Eileen Murray, Jolinda Rockett, and Abi Morrison
Planning for the upcoming year began with a brief discussion on how to structure membership dues now that a monthly auto pay option is set up. Dues paid in full by Sept. 30 will be $200. as before or $18./month by automatic withdrawal. [There will be the $100. 1st year practiotioner and $50. student membership as before as well]. We also agreed to accept business sponsors at [$450.?] /year with their logo going on our website.
One of our main goals for the year is to increase membership to 50% of L.Ac’s in the state. This would make 70 members in total, and give us the financial foundation to lay groundwork for possible introduction of legislation to include acupuncture as an Essential Health Benefit in insurance plans marketed in Maine in late 2014. This will require us to engage in much networking in order to find potential co-sponsors and support for our cause. We need more folks to get actively involved! As Jolinda said: We have to make acupuncture a household word!
Meret suggested that ideally we should have at least 3 people on each of the following committees: legislation, insurance, finance, membership and marketing. This will enable us to spread our influence more widely, such as having more presence at health fairs and expos. If our members could track bills concerning our profession, we could save on legal fees. We plan on gathering enough people to staff a booth at the Common Ground Fair next year, in addition to hosting a panel.
Graham and Meret will be meeting w/ staff from our lobbying firm, Preti Flaherty in mid August and find out the best day to table the Hall of Flags [at the State House] next year. They will also be negotiating a price for their keeping an eye on our legislative interests in the 2014 short session.
If any of the above mentioned pieces of this important work appeal to you in any way, we’d love to talk to you about how to join in. Meret’s annual meeting power point on influencing your political representatives is [will be?] available on CD.
